Many parallels can and have been drawn between Dr. Octagonecologyst and Deltron 3030—the most obvious being that they were both set in a dystopian 31st century future and were produced by Dan the Automator. So with all their similarities and even some fan rivalry, it is very unexpected and exciting to have the two emcees collaborate as Dr. OctoTron all of these years later. It would perhaps be too much to ask for Dan the Automator to be on-board, so in his absence the ever dependable KutMasta Kurt handles the production (and claims to be
The Original Producer who created Dr. Octagon).
Neither Kool Keith, KutMasta Kurt nor Del The Funkee Homosapien try to recreate the sound or themes of Dr. Octagonecologyst or Deltron 3030, and this is something which works in their favour to unshackle them from expectations and direct comparisons. The two tracks sounds very different and largely unrelated. 'Spaz' has a definite KutMasta Kurt and Kool Keith sound that also seems to fit Del like a glove. The second and final track 'Good Stuff' once again brings long time Threshold Recordings artist Motion Man alongside a fired up Kool Keith on a track that sounds like a funky version of an 8-bit video game that I can't quite put my finger on.
There is no word if these two tracks is all that we will ever hear from Dr. OctoTron. Going solely by this release, a full album would be amazing, the trio make a good team and it is probably about time for Keith to do another album with Kurt. The likelihood of this happening is very slim, especially since Deltron Event II is still yet to see the light of day.
