Black Pus - PUS MORTEM
PUS MORTEM is the newest album from Black Pus, the solo project of Brian Chippendale (Lightning Bolt, ahafan88 etc). It feels like only yesterday that his last great album Primordial Pus was released, but light research suggests it was more like a year or so ago.
PUS MORTEM makes for great intensive work-out music. Several tracks feature a steady thudding beat that is regularly spaced so as to allow you to become kind of hypnotised during your workout. This is useful when you are doing a routine run and need to "zone out" in order to complete a decent amount of exercise, this music makes finding the zone for achieving your workout goals much easier.
The first track is called 'HEEBEE GEEBEES'. A steady beat is accompanied with what sounds like a saw or drill or some other type of heavy machinery sound pulsing rhythmically, atop of which Chippendale sings in his characteristic heavily distorted style. It takes about 15-35 seconds of that pulsating beat to get absorbed into the album, allowing you to ease into your pace and begin to focus. The second track 'WHY MUST IT END' continues this steady beat. 'PLAY GOD' features an unusual Chippendale vocal that seems a little under-distorted. Again this takes place atop hypnotic beats and industrial tool influenced bass sounds, and there is this sweet carnival style organ riff or something every now and again.
At this point it becomes pointless to describe each track, as you are already deep in "the zone" of your 30-40 minute workout. The remaining tracks all feature some mild variation on the pulsating thudding drums theme with what sounds like an unusually/dangerously tight snare, as well as assorted industrial sounding instrumentation and wailing distorted vocals. As a Black Pus or even a Lightning Bolt Fan, all of these things are appreciated and enjoyed.
Given I run with an approximate pace of 5 minutes per kilometre (~8 minutes per mile), I can start PUS MORTEM and get around 7 kilometres (4.3 miles) of running comfortably under my belt before the album ends, listening from start to finish (38.7 minutes) with short breaks for traffic interruptions and spitting/drinking as required. If you have the album set on repeat, you can run for as long as you like, but 6-7 km 2 or 3 times a week, depending on your pace, is a pretty decent work out for a week day after a long day in the office. Benefits of regular exercise extend to a better rested sleep, and in combination with a steady diet of 8000 kJ or less per day, assist with weight control and/or loss. After several weeks of running you will begin to notice your body changing, you will have more energy, clearer skin, getting up early in the morning will be a breeze, and you can better focus on your career/family goals.
PUS MORTEM is available at the popular price of whatever you want to pay for it, so get it and have a listen for yourself. This reviewer forked over 4 dollars, and it felt great. If you are not familiar with Black Pus, on your first listen you may be in for an uncomfortable half hour or so, but the health benefits are obvious and need to be included in your lifestyle as soon as is possible.
