June @sardless Mixtape Summary Part I
Written by macron1
Monday, 21 June 2010 21:29

June is humming along, and all the current competition sports are getting in the way of us telling you about what has been good over at the bird. So here it is!

June 1 This tweet landed us in hot water with the one and only Jean Grae, sometimes Talib Kwali associate and the bird who gave us the awesomely titled debut album Attack of the Attacking Things. Offence was taken on account of our innocent comment regarding I AM LEGEND / Will Smith - its got will smith RT @ flavorpill: What are YOU listening to for your BBQ? the mixtape by @ JeanGrae ? Of course you are. http://su.pr/1AhrVC

...To which Jean responded: @sardless if you don't believe "Summertime" is a great fucking song, you're a cotdamn hater. For no reason. So harsh :(

June 2 This day in June was mad, with not less than 4 mixtapes being made available via the @sardless twitter. The Cool Kids give us a mixtape about fishing and shit. Actually very little is said about angling, but it is still OK - Fishing & camping mixtape. Finally..? RT @URBmag The Cool Kids - Tacklebox Mixtape (link foolishly omitted from original post, so here it is)

June 2 The ludicrously named "Com Truise" continues the recent tradition of bands/artists taking lame famous guy pun-based names (see also: Truman Peyote - b.t.w. free download of their fine album Light-Lightning here). Regardless, Com Truise dropped some sweet Commodore-inspired mixtape madness on this day too. - nice Commodore PET. Com Truise / Komputer Cast 1 http://bit.ly/cJl9JG

June 2 Rounding out the day was what must be amongst the finest of the 150-odd XLR8R podcasts to drop thus far, from Teebs. Looking forward to his album that is allegedly coming soon, cos if he is giving shit this good away for free... well YOU DO THE MATH - Sure thing RT @ALPHAPUP RT @BRAINFEEDER: (DOWNLOAD!) @TEEBSIO PODCAST 140 FOR @XLR8RMAG: http://bit.ly/aDK3uC

June 4 The Flavorpill Mixtape XXVIII gets a mention exclusively for the fact that it contains the most excellent track "All Talk" by Kid Cudi and featuring LCD Soundsystem, Chip Tha Ripper and... Christian Bale. While the Bale bit is a tired meme that adds nothing to the track and should die, once you get past this you are presented with the opening riff and the sweet synth bit from LCDs "Dance Yrself Clean" with <some other shit> cleverly put over it, and the final results are outstanding. Get it for this, frankly i cannot even remember anything else from this mixtape - RT: @flavorpill: Flavorpill Mix Tape: Kid Cudi, Morning Benders & mooooooore http://su.pr/2t081D

June 8 Eating Donuts & Other Refined Foods by Jeremiah Jae continues what is quickly becoming a quite common thing to do, remixing J Dilla and giving it away. While it is good and you should check out what the dude did with the donuts, it just seems like every other week something like this hits the wires - MIXED TAPE eating donuts & other refined foods http://bit.ly/cyL6o1

June 10 Ice Cube went on Late Night with The Roots (featuring Jimmy someone), and they did an outstanding rendition of 'Straight Outta Compton', replete with hilarious swear substations that may or may not be more offensive than the original lyrics e.g. "find a good piece of mush / and go up in it", "dumb mo' sucka" etc etc, it is MOTHER MOTHERing excellent - seriously, the video with the suited dudes doing MC Ren and Eazy E's bits (dude nails it) was one of the best things to be seen on the web in early June. ALSO: Ice Cube and Fallon do a duet on 'It was a Good Day', which was... weird - RT: @Awl: The Roots And Ice Cube, "Straight Outta Compton" - http://www.theawl.com/?p=41108

June 11 A guy named Star Slinger gave us his collection of big beat funk good vibes hip-hop instrumentals instrumental hip-hop lo-fi psychedelic pop soul soul beats soulful Manchester on bandcamp for free. If that lot of tags does not give you an adequate idea of what is on the album, NOTHING WILL. Instrumental hip-hop to sooooooooooooth except one track 'Dutchie Courage' that features sped-up vocals from that classic "Pass The Dutchie" and is mostly annoying - Star Slinger - J Dilla / Pete Rock / shoegaze / funk influenced instrumental hip-hop. Check the album (for free) http://bit.ly/9jQjwK

June 15 The bird and one of the dudes from the xx made some mixtapes available, which is weird cos I am sure there is three people in this band? Might be wrong, but if not, feel bad for that other guy. In related news, Safari 5.0 gives a warning that visiting the xx website (www.thexx.info) may harm your computer (Google "Safe Browsing" diagnostic report here for those interested). Must be scared of all the hot XXX action in the URL. Smart - Couple of mixes here. One interesting, one ________ @ thepopmanifesto's mix from @ Romy_oh of the xx, available here - http://bit.ly/bBgc6D

A few weeks ago I put out a request to break the 50 followers mark on twitter. I am pleased to announce that thanks to you and the spambots we are now sitting @65. So thanks and we better not let this new found fame go to our heads.
In other unrelated news congratulations to the All Whites for the historical silencing of Slovakia.

Review - Guilty Simpson - OJ Simpson

This week I was the best man at the wedding. If I'm the best man, why is she marrying him? I review Guilty Simpson's OJ Simpson and Men want the same thing from their underwear that they want from women: a little bit of support, and a little bit of freedom unfortunately it was all over the place and not all that I had hoped for. This post will make sense after reading the review.

The Twitter - May '10
Written by macron1
Sunday, 06 June 2010 21:21

May was mostly mixtape madness. More compilations were spewed forth on the bird in May than at any other time in history. Some were of questionable legality, many were legitimate. Some were good! Some were not! Also, other stuff happened like music videos and what not. Lets see!

May 1 Really interested to know how this turned out... - RT: @RAEKWONICEWATER: In the mac store considering gettin one of these ipads what yall think?

May 4 The long wait is over. The originators of the "party-math" genre finally release their long awaited (by this writer) EP. It is good. And you pay what you want, which makes it awesomer. The 5 tracks that comprise Party Mathematics clock in at a massive 15 and a half minutes in total, and feature a small amount of not terrible vocals alongside some outstanding musicianship the likes of which you would not have heard before cos these guys invent this shit. They give a nod in the direction of the math rock tradition by giving the tracks slightly ludicrous titles - standouts include 'amBROsius' and 'Algoresrhythm', the latter of which features the outstanding lyric "oohooohohbababahh, oohooohohwoahwooahwoahh" - pay what u want - i like this method RT: @NoumenonBros: GET THE ALBUM!!!!! SPREAD THE WORD!!!! - http://bit.ly/asCCIg

May 5 The GASLAMP KILLER says you should download this EP from Mr Dibbs, so you should. Plus there is a bunch of other shit there to look at and to listen to too - RT @GASLAMPKILLER @MrDibbs EP "Inducing Panic" now available for FREE!! www.megaroyalrecords.com Go download NOW!

May 5 That Lenny Slitz Project collab with Leonard Dstroy mentioned here last month: it came out on this day in May. It is for free. Very nice - The LennySlitz Project out today! electronic/experimental/hip-hop/progressive ie. get it - http://leonarddstroy.bandcamp.com

May 7 Dudes got a tumblr. Due to my advanced age, I don't really get tumblr. Judging by his tumblr, neither does diplo (1 post, 0 things liked so far). On tumblr there is that one guy who is always posting stuff, he seems ok, but he claims he works there so he probably has to post constantly across multiple accounts for contractual reasons. In the spirit of "keeping all the basis covered", sardless too has one of these (http://sardless.tumblr.com/). Seems cool, you can create audio posts and what not, might do that one day. But probably not soon - RT @diplo yippee - http://diplo.tumblr.com/

May 11 Turns out episode 58 of the Stones Throw podcast was also excellent. It contains an impressive collection of... raps. Like old shit where they talk about how their rhymes are so great and how they are down with A.P.G., how their bass-lines are so funky and everything is dope-assed, and they use lots of similes to describe feelings and stuff. Why not subscribe, it is free, semi-monthly, and from Stones Throw so it is mostly excellent - Bay Rap Mix (episode 58) of the stones throw podcast is MOST EXCELLENT - http://bit.ly/dB1PtF

May 12 West Coast by Junk Culture (dudes got a tubmlr too) was one of the best hand-held recorded micro-sample based EPs from last year. Check out "Schools out for Dropouts" from the DJ MC series that may or may not be a real thing - GOOD MORNING. DJ JC mix "School's out for Dropouts" by that Junk Culture dude - http://bit.ly/aL5YCp

May 14 A track off of this mixtape, 'Country Shit' got a "best new music" on the pitchfork, and the gorilla vs bear seems to love the shit out of this, even going as far as to say it is the #mixtapeoftheyear. Other reviewers however were unimpressed, but then, what would they know? What do YOU think? — RT @ gorillavsbear: RT @BIGKRIT Big K.R.I.T. - K.R.I.T. Wuz Here http://bit.ly/9JtLqP DOWNLOAD HERE!

May 21 By now, the general deluge of mixtapes has become fatiguing. They all seem to drift into one another with their marathon playing times and endless mashes of usually not-disparate artists. The following from producer Take brings something different to the table, mixing personal favourites Dimlite and Flying Lotus (check out his augmented reality desktop application - it's fucking weird) with the unexpected, such as a breathy and slow sexual cover of the already sexual 'Touch Myself' and a slow-jam of 'Tomorrow Never Knows', producing a generally excellent contribution to the mixtape pile - low level IDM / glitch / instrumental hip hop (allegedly) RT @THEREALTAKE The Getaway Mix : http://bit.ly/d3a7e8

May 24 Another mixture of favourites . This time, minor internet phenomenon The Hood Internet provide a puzzling mixture of tracks "culled from Tobacco's Maniac Meat and Slug + Murs + Aesop Rock's Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez" (link). Weird though, because all I can hear is HEALTH samples that have not been mentioned in any of the descriptions AT ALL. Regardless, the result of mixing all these things together is outstanding. Additionally, it features the excellent lyric, "Pinot, not fuckin' Merlot". Do not miss this one - RT @hoodinternet Free download of The Hood Internet x Tobacco x Felt EP: http://bit.ly/b56e5Y @slugandmurs @maniacmeat @rhymesayers

May 26 Of course, how could we get through May without talking about the big one. After the awesomeness of freebies including Diplo Presents: Free Gucci (Best of The Cold War Mixtapes), Piracy Funds Terrorism Volume 1 and Top Ranking Santogold: A Diplo Dub, expectations were very extremely high in the (albeit 2 day) lead up to LAZERPROOF. While the going was tough in the first few hours after release due to the destruction of the Mad Decent severs wrought by 200,000 folk attempting to get it all at the same time, it should be fixed by now so ENJOY — it is here - 2 long days of waiting is finally over: Major Lazer + La Roux Mixtape LAZERPROOF http://sub.maddecent.com/lazerproof/

That is all. Be sure to check back here later on in the month for a round up of June madness, and as always be sure to hit up @sardless for all your twittering needs.
