REVIEW: Das Racist - The Corner Hotel

Artist: Das Racist
Venue: The Corner Hotel, Melbourne
Date: Mon 30 Jan 2012

Hi readers, how's it going? Thought I would take this opportunity to tell you how the Das Racist show in Melbourne went the other night.

So I looked up what time the show was going to start on the Corner website, it said "Das Racist 9:45-10:45", so I figured I’d leave my place at around 10 past 9 which would allow me to get there on time and also miss the local DJ that was performing before them who I had seen one other time and was not interested in seeing again. I arrive at 9:30ish only to be presented with a sign saying "Das Racist 10pm" so I thought fuck and went and got a beer and then watched this local DJ but he was not too bad this time in fact I am probably confused and it was not who I thought it was and he was ok. This time he had like a sidekick up on stage who talked between tracks and worked as sort of a Phil Schafer-type scenario except in this case Phil would be the DJ so this guy was kind of like Letterman? This guy did some raps and shit over the DJ, it was ok, then at about 5 past 10 they were still making rhymes and music and then the guy said "why are you looking here? Das Racist is on over there" and pointed to the other stage.

So then everyone looked at the other stage and started gathering around as they do in anticipation of the "main event", however in a Kaufmanesque manoeuvre Lakutis came out on the stage with DR guy Dapwell manning the midget laptop and drinks table. Lakutis proceeded to look like a maniac and berate the audience for a good 15-20 minutes or so. He opened with a song that was about some movie that I forget and the lyrics were mostly "Dennis Dennis Quaid bitch" and everyone laughed and joined in. His performance style incorporated numerous maniac smiles and rolling his eyes back in his head and tying his hair back and then untying 30 seconds later. At one point he lost his hair tie and asked the audience for one and said that he needed it because he was important, and then he tied his hair up and then untied it again 30 seconds later.

Lakutis then tore up some dude in the audience who shouted "take it off" and it was funny but I think a few in the audience were a bit like "what the fuck? where's the das racists I paid 40 bucks for?", but Lakutis continued and did an awesome rendition of 'Ja Rule' which he finished off saying something about how he was doing "the rap" and had a shit eating grin and dapwell laughed cos that is the least rap rap on his I'm In the Forest ep/mixtape. Then he was like yelling at the audience and telling them not to smile and not to dance and I think not to laugh while he was singing "I'm Better Than Everybody" with 90% of its lyrics being about how he is better than everybody and shut up and fuck you and by then seemed as if there was going to be a fight between Lakutis and the audience but then the rest of the DR 'crew' came out to that 'Who's That? Brooooooooown' song and Lakutis went and manned the laptop and Das Racist cooled shit down and gave everyone high-fives and everyone seemed happy.

The pretty decent sized crowd sang along to a few of the tracks, particularly 'Michael Jackson' cos it has that "holla" thing that is easy to get. The highlight for me was probably 'Amazing' which sounded really good and everyone did their bits and it is just a really good song. The majority of stuff they did was off of the mixtapes, a couple of tracks from Relax got in there, 'Brand New Dance' was one, 'Rainbow In The Dark' was kind of another, sadly no 'Girl', which would have been funny to see performed live oh well maybe next time. There were a couple of ones they did that I did not recognise, perhaps new shit or maybe a cover that I am unaware of. They performed American rap music for maybe 1 hour and 10 minutes +/-.
